Chapter 1 — Longing（第一章 憧れ）
Countless words come to the Shadow
who carries a sense of longing.
Visions that seem almost like fantasies,
and feel far removed from
who the Shadow is now.
The Shadow longed for the existence of Light.
One day, gathering its courage,
it broke away from the group of shadows
and set out with the aim of becoming Light.
What did the Shadow see at the end of its journey?
And then,
with Aristotle’s words, “Happiness depends upon ourselves,”
as its final guide,
the Shadow continues onward,
moving through many phases of experience
in its pursuit of becoming Light.
From 意気軒高（full of determination）,
独立独歩、independent
beautiful scenery,
an image of oneself as beloved,
an eternity that will never perish...
and fortunate outcomes of destiny
as though they had all been ordained.
追いかける影と逃げる影 — The Pursuing Shadow and the Fleeing Shadow
One day, a「Shadow」that longed for「Light」
fled from the group of shadows.
The other shadows rushed after「that Shadow」.
「You can never become Light.」
「Give up.」
「Come back.」
All kinds of words tried to stop「that Shadow」.
独立独歩
(dokuritsu doppo)
To rely on no one else
and act according to one’s own convictions.
愛月撤灯
(aigetsu tetto)
When one comes to love the moonlight,
one wishes to extinguish the candlelight.
To have a deep love for one particular thing.
四海兄弟

When we treat others
with sincerity and courtesy,
people throughout the world can live together
in harmony, like brothers and sisters.

Chapter 2（第二章）
The Shadow invests time in trial and error
and goes through many experiences.
The words of its fellow shadows—
「Give up.」
「Come back.」「You can never become Light.」
—often return to its mind.
Sometimes they become a source of strength;
on other days, they leave the Shadow feeling small.
Even so,
it struggles desperately to become Light.
Flowers and plants mark
the passing of the months and years.
At times, the Shadow gazes upon a moonlit night.
「Time is money.」
Through the words of Benjamin Franklin,
it comes to feel how precious passing time is.
It encounters the Zen phrase「語尽山雲海月情」.
It speaks with newly found companions
about who it is,
and its determined efforts truly become【煌めき】.
Then,
Rousseau’s words—“To live is not merely to breathe,
but to act.”—
rouse the Shadow to press on.
It also encounters the proverb「艱難汝を玉にす」:
「Hardship and adversity make a person wise and worthy.」
逃げた影の経験 — The Fleeing Shadow’s Experiences
After leaving the group to become「Light」,「that Shadow」
accumulates time and experience.
From time to time, it remembers the other shadows
who chased after it and the many words they spoke,
and continues onward.
清風拂明月
(seifu meigetsu o harau)
On an autumn night, the bright moon and autumn wind each become host and guest,
with neither one taking precedence over the other.
If you want to be respected by others
the great thing is to respect yourself.
Only by that, only by self-respect
will you compel others to respect you.

Chapter 3 — The Beginning（第三章 はじまり）
Through experience, the Shadow comes to realize
that it cannot become Light.
Just when despair seems ready to overwhelm it...
the Shadow understands:
「To give up is to begin.」
It had gazed at Light with such intense fascination
and could speak endlessly about it,
yet had never truly looked at itself as a Shadow.
Realizing this marks a new beginning.
It begins to seek the purpose it carries as a Shadow.
Before the Shadow,
everything in the landscape
seems to take on color for the first time,
bringing about a paradigm shift.
It still wishes to become what it admires.
Darwin’s words—“It is not the strongest that survives,
but the one most responsive to change.”—
lead the Shadow onward,
prompting it to ask what【change】truly is.
It begins to consider the real meaning
of【changing】.
What does it mean to compare oneself with others,
or to want to triumph over something?
Picasso’s words, “I do not seek. I find,”
stir its heart, and then
it encounters Plato’s words:
“The greatest victory is to conquer yourself.”
逃げた影のはじまり — The Fleeing Shadow’s Beginning
Through its experiences,「that Shadow」realizes
that it cannot become「Light」.
The other shadows had said:
「You can never become Light.」
「Give up.」
「Come back.」
Confronted with the reality that their words were true,
the Shadow gives up on becoming「Light」.

Chapter 4 — Awakening（第四章 覚醒）
In that moment, the Shadow awakened.
It no longer hesitates
to choose and decide everything for itself.
With the power surging within, the Shadow grows stronger
and evolves into a deeper presence.
Toward the place where the awakened Shadow will arrive—
「平常心是道」: to be just as one is.
To accept is to choose,
and to make a decision.
With this conviction in its heart, the Shadow acts.
逃げた影の覚醒 — The Awakening of the Fleeing Shadow
「That Shadow」accepted having been born a Shadow.
「That Shadow」came to understand
that the true meaning of“giving up”
is to face reality exactly as it is.
「That Shadow」then asked
how it should live as a Shadow
and chose to seek the destiny held within it.
Now or Never
If you are going to do it, now is the only time.

Chapter 5 — Toward Where the Will Leads（第五章 意思のある方へ）
「That Shadow」
returns to the group of shadows of its own free will.
The shadows in the group
had long awaited the return of「that Shadow」.
They watched over their returning companion and quietly welcomed it home.
The group of shadows had also spent all that time waiting.
Through days when cicadas and bell crickets sang,
when spring breezes blew and waves rose,
the group remembered
the words they had cast at the Shadow on the day it left.
“To regret the past. To hope in the future.
And never to be satisfied with the present.
That is what I have done throughout my life.”

And then, the Shadow returned.
The shadows in the group also feel relieved
that the Shadow has accepted them.
“Change is the only eternity.”

Change in life is evolution.
It is a changing landscape as one moves forward,
and a paradigm shift revealed through awareness.
Longing and experience had once sought the change of becoming something else.
Yet the landscape seen by the Shadow as it changes again and again
is entirely different, even within the same group.
There is no longer any hesitation.
All that remains is to move ahead.
「Where there is a will, there is a way.」
With its own will, the Shadow continued onward
toward the future beyond.
